Serie A Round Up
Juventus are now within a point of leaders Napoli as the battle for who wins the 2017/18 Serie A season hots up. The Old Lady were in imperious form at the weekend as they took Verona to the cleaners, while Napoli got the job done with a slim victory as they hold on to top spot.
Other contenders – Inter and Roma – failed to win their respective games, while AC Milan also failed to claim a victory at the weekend. Meanwhile, Benevento got their first Serie A win after 19 games, as they recorded a 1-0 victory over Chievo.
We take a more detailed look at how the top teams fared in the last games of 2017.
Verona 1-3 Juventus
A first half strike by Blaise Matuidi and a second half brace by Paulo Dybala ensured Juve got maximum points, even though they were pegged back shortly after they took the lead, with Verona leveling. The win sees them go within a point of Napoli at the top of the table.
Crotone 0-1 Napoli
The Naples club scraped through as they held on to top spot in Serie A. At this point, they know they must keep winning to keep the leash on champions Juventus, who appear to have finally gotten their mojo back on.
Inter 0-0 Lazio
The Nerazzurri suffered their first defeat of the season last weekend, before losing in the Copa Italia to city rivals Milan in midweek and this past weekend made three games without a win as they failed to go past the in-form Lazio. The result means Inter remain third, failing to close the gap on Juventus in second, while Lazio are fifth, four points off Inter.
Roma 1-1 Sassuolo
Roma also failed to advance their title surge as they failed to beat struggling Sassuolo. Although they took the lead, the capital club let it slip as the visitors leveled to end the game in a stalemate. As it stands, Roma are fourth, nine points off the top of the table.
Fiorentina 1-1 Milan
Gennaro Gatuso failed to build on the win over Inter in the Copa Italia, as they were held in Florence. Hakan Calhanoglu’s 75th minute goal saved Milan’s blushes, after Fiorentina took a 71st minute lead.
